Free or Paid VPN: What the Difference and the Risks Are

A free VPN looks like the ideal solution right up to the first question: what, then, does the service earn its money on. Infrastructure costs money — servers, channels, support, the constant upkeep of routes in changing network conditions. If the user is not paying, someone else is, and that someone is usually an advertiser or a buyer of data. Here, without moralizing, is a look at the models that exist, why they are dangerous, and in which scenarios a free option really is suitable.

How Free VPN Services Make Money

There are only a handful of models, and they are well documented. The first is advertising inside the app: banners and video clips paid for by an ad network. The second is the sale of anonymized — and sometimes thoroughly personal — statistics about which sites and apps users open. The third is affiliate programs, where the service inserts its own referral tags into links to shops. The fourth, the most unpleasant, is reselling the channel: the user's device becomes an exit node of someone else's network, and unfamiliar traffic passes through your home address. The fifth model is an honest one — a free plan as a storefront for the paid one, with clear limits and no surprises. The problem is that from the outside all five look identical: a “connect” button and a promise of a fast internet. They can be told apart only by the privacy policy and by whether the company earns anything from subscriptions at all. A useful exercise before installing is to find the pricing page on the service's site. If there is no paid plan at all, then the money is coming from somewhere else, and it is worth finding out where.

Selling Data and Substituting Advertising

A VPN sees roughly what your telecoms operator would see: all of a device's traffic passes through its server. Beyond that the tunnel adds nothing — what changes is the addressee of your trust: instead of the ISP you trust the company running the VPN. A service that earns money on data can collect the history of domains, session times and device characteristics and tie all of it to an advertising identifier. A profile like that is worth money on the market. An appeal to “you accepted the terms at installation” is weak protection: consent to the processing of personal data has to be specific and informed, and a clause buried in a long text does not meet that requirement. Substituting advertising is a category of its own. The contents of an encrypted connection cannot simply be rewritten en route: the app has either to talk you into installing its own root certificate, or to lure you into its built-in browser, where the page is opened by its own means. Both schemes exist, and both are visible at the installation stage — if a client asks you to install a certificate or insistently offers “its own” browser, that is a reason to stop. The worst case is built-in analytics or advertising libraries inside the client itself, which keep sending telemetry even when the connection is switched off. That is exactly why the question of who pays for the server matters more than the question of speed. Verifying this from the user's side is next to impossible: what remains is to read the privacy policy and look at which permissions and certificates the client requests at installation.

Protocols with a Recognizable Signature and Dropped Connections

The second problem is technical, and it is not about the age of the protocols. Neither WireGuard nor OpenVPN is obsolete: both have a fixed handshake with a recognizable signature, which deep packet inspection equipment identifies, after which the connection is torn down. Free services stay on precisely those protocols for years, because there is nobody to change the infrastructure and nothing to pay for it with. Hence the typical picture: the app connects on the tenth attempt, works for ten minutes and drops out. On top of that, a free service has a limited pool of addresses, and it is shared by everyone: as soon as a range lands in the filters, every user loses access at once. Updating the infrastructure costs money, and in a free model there is no money — the circle closes. Protocols such as VLESS and ShadowSocks are built differently, and differently from each other. In practice VLESS is used inside TLS, and from the outside such a connection looks similar to ordinary HTTPS, although specialised analysis methods still tell it apart — the point is to make classification harder, not impossible. ShadowSocks has no TLS layer at all: it is an encrypted stream with no recognizable header, that is, a different strategy — not pretending to be a familiar protocol but having no noticeable markers. Both require constant upkeep: changing domains, rotating addresses, responding to new filtering methods. That is work someone has to pay for. Hence the characteristic seasonality of the complaints: the service works for a few weeks after an update, then stops connecting again — and access disappears at precisely the moment it is needed most.

Limits on Speed, Traffic and Devices

Even an honest free plan has a ceiling, and it is usually felt immediately. The exact figures differ from service to service, so what you need to look at are the terms of the plan you are taking, but the set of limits repeats itself. The traffic limit is most often a few gigabytes a month, and with video it runs out over a couple of evenings. Speed is frequently throttled artificially to encourage a move to the paid plan: pages open, but a stream in high resolution no longer does. The choice of locations is cut down, and the ones that remain available are as a rule the most overloaded. The number of devices is often limited to one, so the phone and the laptop have to be switched over in turn. Add the support queue, which on a free plan usually simply does not exist, and you get an honest picture: a free VPN solves a one-off task but copes badly with a daily load. A separate annoyance is server congestion in the evening hours: free locations fill up at exactly the time people sit down to watch video. When a Free VPN Really Is Appropriate

There are scenarios where a free option is justified, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. A one-off task: opening a single article, checking how a site looks when you connect from another location, downloading a small file. Testing a hypothesis: working out whether a service really is unavailable because of regional restrictions rather than an outage. Work with public data where there is nothing to intercept: reading the news, documentation, maps. In all of these cases the risk is limited, because nothing personal passes through the tunnel. The rule is simple: do not sign in to email, banking, work systems or messengers over a free connection, and do not send documents. As soon as the scenario becomes a permanent one, the saving stops being a saving: the time spent reconnecting and the risk of a leak cost more than a subscription. One more use is reasonable as well: a free option as a fallback route for when the main service is unavailable and one page needs opening quickly. Keep it switched off by default and turn it on deliberately.

How a Paid Service Differs

The paid model changes the main thing — the source of income. It is in the company's interest that you remain a subscriber rather than that an advertiser buys your profile, and that is the most dependable alignment of interests possible here. Everything else follows from it: modern protocols and their regular updating, infrastructure that there is somebody to maintain, real support, several devices per account, a choice from the list of available servers. Something is added that in the free version does not exist by definition: if a route stops working, access is restored without your involvement — there is no need to reconfigure the client. Transparency is part of the paid product too: a clear policy on logs and a coherent answer to the question of what exactly the service stores. All of this can be checked before payment: look at which protocols are declared, how many devices are included in the particular plan, what its speed and traffic limits are, and what the privacy policy says about data retention. The choice between paying blind and risking your data to save money is a false one — there is a third path. Trial access gives a normal connection without the tricks of the free model: no advertising in the client, no selling of statistics and no turning your device into someone else's exit node — the economics of a subscription simply do not call for such tricks. It is not, however, the equal of a paid plan: trial access runs on a plan of its own with its own limits, while the paid plans differ from one another in the number of devices, the speed cap, the volume of traffic per month, the number of proxy slots and team members. For the main check that is enough: how the connection behaves on your provider in the evening, whether the speed is sufficient for video, whether the services you need open, whether the client is convenient.
