Why ChatGPT won't open
The restriction comes from OpenAI: the service checks your IP and rejects unsupported regions. Anthropic does the same with Claude, Google with Gemini. Ordinary browser settings do not solve this — the service needs to see an IP from a country where it officially operates. A VPN gives exactly that: the connection runs through the nearest available server on the list, and to ChatGPT your address looks like an address in a supported region.
What matters specifically for AI services
AI platforms are sensitive to IP reputation: when thousands of users share one cheap VPN address, the service starts asking for CAPTCHAs more often or limiting accounts. The platforms' own rules are outside our control, though: which region your account may use is the service's decision.
Stability for work and API access
If you use AI for work — through the web UI or the API — dropped connections get in the way: a long conversation or a streaming response dies midway. VLESS as a rule handles long-lived connections well, and if a route stops working, access is restored without any action from you — there is nothing to reconfigure in the client. Developers also get access to documentation and SDKs that are closed to Russian IPs.
One VPN for everything
You do not need a separate VPN just for ChatGPT: the same connection also works with other services that will not open on your network — YouTube or Discord, for example. Install the client on your computer and your phone: how many devices you can connect depends on the plan, and on the top plan it is up to 30 devices. If you only need AI in the browser, the Chrome extension is enough — it proxies browser traffic without touching other apps, and it needs no separate key: just sign in to your account.
