Why YouTube may not work properly
In 2024–2025 the main mechanism was throttling: TSPU equipment (technical countermeasures against threats) filters traffic at the level of backbone providers, so videos buffered endlessly and quality dropped to 144p. In February 2026 the YouTube domain was removed from the national domain name system, and at some carriers the address of the service stopped resolving — that is no longer throttling but a different mechanism. The picture varies from network to network: in some, video opens with difficulty; in others, it does not open at all.
How a VPN restores access
A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a server in another country. Traffic travels inside the tunnel, and the carrier cannot see which sites you open. The tunnel does not become invisible, though: filtering systems examine not the contents but the tunnel itself, by its network 'fingerprint'. That is why a protocol without a recognizable signature matters — with one, YouTube as a rule opens again and plays smoothly.

On a computer or phone, a VPN client installs in under a minute. With TVs and set-top boxes it depends on the device: on Android TV the Happ client works — it shows a QR code on screen and you scan it with your phone, because the TV has no camera. For boxes that do not accept third-party apps there is no universal solution: the connection is usually configured on the router instead. What matters most is speed and a steady channel. Protocols with a recognizable signature, such as OpenVPN and WireGuard, are often identified by filtering on Russian networks and stop working: the issue is not their age but their fixed handshake, which is easy to spot. Modern options are more practical — VLESS or ShadowSocks, whose traffic is markedly harder to classify. Route quality to the server counts too: the shorter and steadier it is, the fewer dips on streaming video. In the client, pick the nearest available server on the list — that is usually enough to watch in high quality without switching often.
